The Benefits of Belonging – AICPA-CIMA Chairman Okorie Ramsey

Ever wondered what propels a successful finance career forward? What makes the difference between a good career and an exceptional one? In a recent episode of my Future Ready Live podcast, I delved into this topic and explored the power of belonging, especially within professional groups like AICPA-CIMA.

Okorie Ramsey is vice president of Sarbanes/Oxley at Kaiser Permanente, and he’s a pro in finance, holding designations like CPA, CGMA, PMP and NACD.DC. He has an authentic passion for accounting, stemming from his early involvement during high school and active engagement in various organizations throughout college and his career. His diverse experiences have fueled his enthusiasm for helping others thrive in their careers. Hence, it’s no surprise that he’s the current chair of AICPA-CIMA, too

In our candid talk, Okorie emphasized the pivotal role of professional associations like AICPA-CIMA in shaping the future of the accounting profession. These associations provide not just support but a vast network of expertise and resources to navigate the ever-evolving landscape.

We turned to the crucial topic of ESG (environmental, social and governance) reporting, a subject of great significance in today’s business world. Okorie shed light on our recent ESG Symposium that focused on important aspects like regulatory expectations and the importance of accurate documentation and controls. Notably, he highlighted California’s recent legislation mandating verification of greenhouse gas emissions data by 2025, offering a significant opportunity for the accounting profession to take the lead.

Drawing parallels between Sarbanes-Oxley implementation and ESG reporting, Okorie showcased how our skill sets can be applied to new territories, adding substantial value. Moreover, we discussed how our collaborative efforts, both within the profession and with legislative bodies, display our unique ability to shape and influence policies, ultimately working to uphold public trust.

We also touched on the strong relationship between AICPA-CIMA and state CPA societies, which is truly the type of collaboration that is unparalleled in other industries. This sets us apart and allows for coordinated efforts that benefit the border profession.

Let’s not forget about the future of our profession — the students and the upcoming generation of accountants. They’re not just seeking jobs; they want meaningful careers that create value and contribute to a better world. To attract and retain this fresh talent, we need to more effectively communicate the value of our profession, showing off all of the exciting and multifaceted opportunities.

Addressing the pipeline issue and nurturing a diverse pool of talent, we discussed proactive steps taken by our professional associations. Initiatives like the registered apprenticeship program are game-changers, really paving the way for the future.

In closing, being part of a professional association is more than just the tag at the end of your name; it’s about the sense of belonging and the opportunity to make a difference. Okorie’s journey stands as proof of the incredible impact we can have when we unite as a profession.

So, here’s to embracing the power of belonging, standing united as a profession and shaping a future that’s not just future-ready but future-thriving.
