Course Author

Tiffany Bell, Ph.D

Dr. Tiffany Bell is a subject matter expert in Critical Intercultural Communication. She has designed and delivered several workshops, training, courses, and classes that grapple with effective communication, ethnocentrism, intercultural adaptation, conflict management, microaggressions, unconscious bias, empathy in leadership, and media literacy.

She has worked with various organizations throughout her career: the Chinese Ministry of Education, Los Angeles Urban League, National Communication Association, Michigan City Police Department, Indiana University Department of African American Studies, Chicago School of Professional Psychology, GMR Marketing, and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. Currently, she is the Graduate Director of the Digital Media and Sports Media Program at Valparaiso University’s Communication and Visual Arts Department.

Dr. Bell’s work includes Digital Literacy, Intercultural Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Gender Communication, Persuasion, Conflict and Negotiation, and Public Speaking. In March of 2021, she published in the refereed academic journal Communication Teacher. This article is entitled “Time for a change in how we teach public speaking across the world: Using culturally relevant pedagogy to teach public speaking in Chinese classrooms.” Due to the recent civil unrest and social injustice, this article grapples with challenging the status quo and respecting differences with academic rigor, giving society the courage to hope for a better world. She had the opportunity to share this research with the entire Faculty at Valparaiso University.

In 2021, she performed a Ted Talk at Valparaiso University regarding the empathy crisis in our society. In 2020, Dr. Bell became an inaugural fellow for the National Communication Association (NCA) Carolyn Calloway-Thomas Inclusivity Speaker Series. She earned her master’s and Ph.D. degrees at Howard University in the Department of Communication and a bachelor’s degree at Indiana University in Communication and Journalism.
