You’re Not Broken––The System Is

Strategy sets the destination; the system decides the fate. Efficiency flatters the parts, but effectiveness determines the whole. Systems thinking is the one discipline that integrates all others, reminding us that wholeness often requires slack, sacrifice, and restraint. You can optimize every part and still destroy the system.

Learning Objectives
  • Identify how most organizational problems are systemic rather than personal—and how fixing people rarely fixes outcomes.
  • Indicate how elements, interactions, and purpose combine to produce predictable results in accounting firms.
  • Recognize that culture emerges from the system—and cannot be changed directly.

Major Topics

Every firm is perfectly designed to get the results it’s currently getting—good, bad, or indifferent. Systems thinking shifts leadership attention away from blaming individuals and toward understanding the invisible structures, incentives, feedback loops, and assumptions that quietly shape behavior. This session introduces systems thinking in plain language, revealing why optimizing parts often damages the whole—and why lasting change requires redesigning the system itself. Most firm leaders believe their biggest problems are people problems, performance problems, accountability problems, or execution problems. They’re wrong. Those are system outcomes, not root causes. We assume that local efficiency efforts will add up and improve overall firm performance. Yet a local change only makes a difference if it improves the overall flow.
