The Essentials of Data Analytics: Excel & PowerBI

Accountants are in an optimal position to deliver value through data analytics. In the business world, this starts with Microsoft Excel. Today’s Excel is a significantly more robust spreadsheet, where the application of Excel’s power query and power pivot tools enable dramatic improvement in the data analytics process. The knowledge and skills gained in Excel’s advanced tools translates directly to the PowerBI platform.

You have the tools you need to get started in data analytics.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. Understand getting started with data analytics in Excel and how PowerBI is a complementary tool in the process
  2. Explain the Excel data skills hierarchy – advancing to visualizations in PowerBI
  3. Explain the power tools in Excel, power query and power pivot, and the corresponding tools in PowerBI
  4. Understand how to approach working with “big data” – millions of records – in Excel and PowerBI

Major Topics

Microsoft Excel is a ubiquitous tool in accounting and finance and developing your Excel and data analysis skills is key to keeping your skills relevant in the data driven world we now live in. It is also the gateway to effectively using Microsoft’s PowerBI services.

Excel data analytics knowledge reviewed in this session will include:

  • The “ETLR” construct – extract, transform, load and report
  • Proper datasets (sources, Excel Tables, etc.)
  • Cleaning datasets – using Excel power query / Get & Transform
  • Data analysis with Pivot Tables
  • Introduction to data modeling using power pivot (Data Model, DAX and enhanced pivot tables) and working with “big data”

All attendees receive a case study “project how-to guide” on how to generate an automated File Directory list from their computer / network drive. This is an excellent resource and will provide immediate value to your work world.
