Strategy Requires Sacrifice

Most accounting firms don’t lack intelligence, skills, or data. They lack choice. Strategy is not about predicting the future—it’s about choosing a future worth enforcing. This session reframes strategy as a discipline of designed choices that create positioning differentiation, pricing power, and customer clarity. If pricing answers the question “What should we charge?” Strategy answers the far more important one: “Why should anyone choose us at all?”

Learning Objectives
  • Identify how strategy is not planning, benchmarking, or goal-setting—but an integrated set of choices.
  • Indicate how to articulate a clear winning aspiration, where-to-play, and how-to-win in uncomplicated terms.
  • Recognize how strategy and positioning must precede pricing—and why weak strategy guarantees pricing pressure.
  • Recall that your firm is defined by the customers you don’t have and the offerings you don’t provide.

Major Topics

Strategy has been diluted into planning cycles, financial projections, and priority lists that avoid tradeoffs. But strategy is not planning—that’s an oxymoron. Planning organizes activity; strategy commits to direction. Planning comforts us; strategy confronts us. Until a firm decides where it will play, how it will win, and who it will not serve, everything downstream—planning, pricing, positioning, branding—becomes reactive.

Who Should Attend

Firm leaders who are responsible for designing a real strategy—one that is clear, courageous, and coherent. They will find that pricing becomes easier, customers become more loyal, and competition becomes less relevant.
