Managing Across Generations: How to Lead Multi-Generational Teams

In a rapidly and continuously changing workplace, the demographic shifts means that there are now five different generations in the workforce. While each individual brings their own talents and perspectives, leaders of teams must be able to understand the similarities and differences of their employees, and maximize all their talents and skills to navigate a changing world of work.

This session is designed to provide leaders with an understanding of the demographic shifts in the workplace and how that translates into managing a multi-generational team. Participants will learn about approaches for better understanding the perspective and lived experiences of their employees, tools for engaging and communicating with employees, and approaches for developing, and coaching employees, regardless of tenure or experience so that they can be effective employees in today’s workplace.

  • Recognize key trends for and shifts of the multi-generational workforce and what this means for learning and development practitioners
  • Identify how approaches including coaching, feedback, and mentorship can be used to develop and upskill employees in the flow of their work
  • Apply empathy-based tactics like perspective taking and design thinking to better understand employees
  • Assess approaches for communicating effectively within employees across work modality (ex: virtual, in-person, digital communication)
