Introduction to NotebookLM for Accounting & Finance Professionals

Accountants spend a lot of time working with documents (PDFs, filings, and regulatory guidance) as a core part of their job. This is tedious work. NotebookLM is Google’s AI-powered research assistant — and unlike general-purpose AI tools, works entirely within the documents you give it. Upload resources (articles, white papers, financial filings, regulatory standards) and ask questions or create content. NotebookLM finds the answer and tells you exactly where it came from. In this one-hour session, you’ll learn how to set up and use NotebookLM, see it demonstrated on real accounting and finance tasks, and leave with a practical plan to put it to work immediately.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize what NotebookLM is, how it differs from general-purpose AI tools, and why source-grounded AI is particularly valuable in accounting and finance.
  2. Recall how to set up notebooks, upload source documents, and prompt NotebookLM to extract insights, summaries, and cross-document comparisons.
  3. Select practical use cases for NotebookLM in their own work and recognize where professional judgment and verification remain essential.

Major Topics
  1. This course introduces accounting and finance professionals to NotebookLM — Google’s AI research assistant that reasons over your content rather than the open internet. Participants will learn what makes it different from tools like ChatGPT or Copilot, why that distinction matters, and how to get started quickly through a live demonstration of the interface.
  2. The course includes use case demonstrations directly relevant to accounting and finance professionals: analyzing and summarizing documents, creating executive level summaries, and rapidly extracting themes from documents and reports. Additionally, creating content for different modes of consumption and audiences will be covered.
  3. Participants will learn strategies that produce better results — including how to ask for structured outputs, drill down with follow-up questions, and compare across multiple source documents. The course concludes with a look at NotebookLM’s limitations, Google’s data privacy model, and the practical next steps for building a personal NotebookLM workflow.
