Excel Essentials & Intro to Data Analysis For Accounting and Finance: Part 3 – Data Management & Introduction to Power Query

In Part 3 of this 4 part series, you will learn essential knowledge that every accounting and finance professional should understand to work effectively and productively in Excel.

Extracting and shaping data is the foundation of preparing analysis and deriving insight to make more informed business decisions. In this session, we delve into developing a proper data set, how (and why) to use Tables to create dynamic and flexible data sets, “building out” the data to enable flexible analysis, and how Excel’s Power Tools (Power Query) can simplify and automate much of the data preparation process.

  1. Understand the “ETLR” structure of basic data analysis
  2. Develop proper data sets using Excel Tables capabilities
  3. Develop a data set for analysis by expanding available information fields for optimal analysis
  4. Explain the basic advantages of Power Query to extract and shape the data

Prerequisites

Experience using functions and formulas in Excel is helpful. The Power Query discussion uses the Microsoft 365 version of Excel. In older Excel versions (2010 and 2013), this is an add-in that needs to be installed. Power Query will look different depending on the Excel version installed.
